Brief Overview of Carpet Fibers

Nylon: This is by far the most popular synthetic carpet fiber used in carpet today. It offers tremendous value, performance, and ease of maintenance. Nylon provides brilliant colors and hides soil and traffic well.

Olefin: This fiber is also called polypropylene, and is extremely popular in Berbers and level loops. Olefin carpets are highly stain, static, mold, and mildew resistant. They can be used in indoor or outdoor carpets, including outdoor turf. Olefin carpets do not resist matting and crushing as well as carpets made of nylon fibers.

Polyester: Gives excellent color clarity with a soft feel to the carpet. Lacks the durability of a nylon carpet.

Acrylic: Has a real wool look and appearance. Used mainly in level loops, bath mats and some velvet carpet styles. Offers good mold and mildew resistance with low static levels.

Wool: Although somewhat expensive, wool still offers great bulk, performance, and an elegant look.

Smartstrand made with Dupont Sorona: This is a new generation PTT (polytrumethylene terephthalate) yarn fiber produced by Mohawk. It offers superior, engineered-in stain resistance that will never wash or wear off. Smartstrand does not repel liquids, but traps the liquid within the fiber where it can be easily removed rather than allowing the liquid to fall to the back, through the carpet, and into the padding where it is trapped and can lead to other problems. It also has excellent resilience and recovery attributes that result in outstanding durability. The addition of Dupont Sorona polymer adds softness without adjusting to denier which can compromise durability.
